ท่ามกลางบรรยากาศตึงเครียดของสงครามที่กำลังก่อตัวขึ้น โลกของเราผ่านสงครามขนาดใหญ่มาครั้งแล้วครั้งเล่า ทั้งสงครามในรูปแบบ (Conventional Warfare) และสงครามนอกรูปแบบ (Unconventional Warfare) รวมถึงสงครามเย็น(Cold War) ที่เชื่อว่าได้จบไปแล้ว จนมาถึงสงครามลูกผสม (Hybrid Warfare) ในปัจจุบันที่แสดงให้เห็นแล้วว่าความขัดแย้งนั้นไม่เคยหมดไปจากโลก ในขณะที่สังคมปัจจุบันมีความซับซ้อนมากขึ้น เราต่างรู้ดีว่าการทำสงครามในสถานการณ์เช่นนี้จะยิ่งกระทบกับเศรษฐกิจและเสถียรภาพในระดับโลก นิทรรศการ Against the Wall: กำแพง - ความคิด โดย วัลลภ หาญสันเทียะ ได้นำกลิ่นอายของความขัดแย้งกลับมาย้ำเตือนเราอีกครั้งผ่านร่องรอยของสนิม โลหะ คราบกลิ่นอายของความเกลียดชังที่ยังหลอกหลอนความสงบสุขเรื่อยมาในโลกใบนี้
ในช่วงเวลาระหว่างสงครามทั้งขนาดเล็กและขนาดใหญ่ที่ผ่านมา เบื้องหลังความขัดแย้ง ยังมีเรื่องราว เงื่อนไขที่นำไปสู่ความวุ่นวายที่ซับซ้อน ความเป็นการเมืองระหว่างมนุษย์เป็นปัจจัยที่สำคัญที่ทำให้สงครามยังเป็นวิถีที่ไม่เคยหมดสิ้นไปอย่างแท้จริง สงครามจึงไม่ใช่แค่การเผชิญหน้ากันด้วยอาวุธเพื่อเข่นฆ่าเอาชีวิตกันเท่านั้น ยังมีรูปแบบอีกมากมายที่เราจะสามารถนิยามภายใต้คำจำกัดความของสงคราม ไม่ว่าจะเป็นความขัดแย้งทางด้านเศษฐกิจ ทรัพยากร ศาสนา เชื้อชาติ การทูต แม้กระทั้งความเชื่อในทางประวัติศาสตร์ก็ยังเป็นอีกองค์ประกอบของสงครามที่ไม่เคยจบสิ้น
นิทรรศการของวัลลภ หาญสันเทียะ ได้นำเสนอร่องรอยของทุก ๆ คำจำกัดความของสงคราม เพื่อให้ผู้ชมได้สัมผัสถึงความคลุมเครือขัดแย้งของการก่ออาชญากรรมระดับโลก การล้มตายของผู้คนไม่เคยนำไปสู่สันติภาพ เช่นเดียวกับชัยชนะก็ไม่เคยให้ภาพของความสงบสุขที่แท้จริง มนุษย์เราได้สร้างกำแพงที่มองไม่เห็นนี้จนกลายเป็นรูปแบบของสิ่งก่อสร้างที่แบ่งแยกเราออกจากกันในนิยามของรัฐ ประเทศ ปิดกั้นไม่ให้พบกับความสันติที่แท้จริง

Amidst the building threat of imminent war currently felt around the globe, our world has stood through countless large-scale struggles. Whether it be through conventional and unconventional warfare, the Cold War - which many believe to be over, up to the hybrid warfare of modern times, it is painfully apparent that conflict remains ever-present in the world. While contemporary society continues to grow in complexity, all of us are aware that a full-blown war under the current circumstances would impact the economy and stability on a global scale. The ‘Against the Wall: กำแพง - ความคิด’ exhibition by Wanlop Hansunthai gives audiences the scent of conflict through rust and metal, to remind audiences of the lingering hatred that continues to put peace in our time beyond reach.
In the moments between past wars both large and small, there are always stories to be told regarding the elaborate web of chaos that lead up to these conflicts. The political nature of human interaction is a foundational reason for why war has never been truly eradicated. As such, wars need not merely be a violent exercise in taking the enemy’s lives, but can take on many forms, all of which can be categorized as an act of war. Be it conflicts of economics, resources, faith, ethnicity, diplomacy, even historical ideologies, all of these can become fuel for the perpetual machine of war and strife.
This exhibition by Wanlop Hansunthai presents the traces of every definition of war, giving audiences the chance to experience the ambiguity and horror of crimes committed on a global scale. The deaths of innocents has never successfully brought about peace, the same way the outcome of victory has never been true peace. Humanity has built this invisible wall into a structure that divides us from each other under the context of nations and borders, holding us back from discovering true unity.
The ‘Against the Wall: กำแพง – ความคิด’ exhibition by Wanlop Hansunthai will be on display from the 12th of November - 24th of December, 2022, at the Numthong Art Space (72/3 Soi Ari 5 North, Paholyothin 7 Rd., Phayathai, Bangkok, 10400).
Open Tuesdays to Saturdays, 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM. (Closed on Sundays - Mondays, including national holidays)
